The STEAM Punks After-School Program is aimed at providing self-directed, age-appropriate activities for kids ages 12 to 17.
Program hours are 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. .
From 3:30 to 4 p.m., a light snack is offered. The snack helps squelch after-school hunger, allowing participants to focus on program activities. This is not a cooked meal as we have done in the past. Anyone arriving after 4 p.m. and needing a snack, is offered a snack in the café area to keep from distracting program activities.
From 4 to 4:30 p.m., participants are generally offered a physical activity. This is something the teens have asked for and we see it as a nice break from their day of sitting still in classes. The activity is offered in the rear of the library and anyone not wishing to participate is asked to study or play board games quietly in the café area.
From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., participants are offered a variety of activities at various stations in the rear area of the library. Teens can choose from table-top games, crafts and studying. This promotes self-directed, library-appropriate activities.
We sometimes host speakers and off-site activities and are hoping to incorporate a food-prep activity.
Volunteers help us expand program activities. Volunteers must meet library expectations, follow library policy and pass criminal and child abuse background checks.
In order to provide a wholesome, fun and productive environment for participants, we adhere to a no-nonsense discipline procedure.
